The work
of Laguna, California artist BenWill (Benjamin Williamson)
reflects the symbiotic ties between nature,
culture and relationships. His passion lies in being an observer
- of the natural, of people - as he captures the unique and the
profound. A childhood spent in Curacao and Southern California
as a surfer and motocross racer, and in travels throughout South
America, fostered a love of natural spaces and interest in the
commonality of cultural experience.
His love of painting began at the age of ten, winning numerous
awards throughout his youth as he created images to describe
his observations of the world around him. While working towards
a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree, Benjamin brought a multi-media
dimension to the local California art scene, coordinating art
lectures and presentations throughout the community. It has always
been Benjamin's belief that art is an important marker of culture
and society - creating a means for reflection and discourse that
fosters a re-thinking of the status quo.
Benjamin takes as his influence the works of the post-Impressionist,
Expressionist, and Abstract Expressionist painters, such as Van
Gogh, Munch, Kandinsky, and Rothko. However, the BenWill style
is considered very unique - very one-of-a-kind. He fuses dramatic
brushstrokes and multi-layered texturing with inventive color
variations. He blends these elements to render the emotions and
energy inherent within the external and internal spaces - creating
a mood and evoking the imagination of the viewer. Benjamin believes
that an artist must continually extend their works to reflect
change and allow for continual growth. Thus, the works of BenWill
reflect a consistent use of experimentation and exploration of
form and composition.
The works of BenWill appear in hundreds of private and corporate
collections throughout North America, South America, Asia, and
Europe.
"I
see my art as an inherent part of who I am. I do this work
to express my thoughts, questions,
and
observations on canvas. Each of my paintings contains a variety
of meanings
with symbols and elements embedded to provoke the viewer's
evolving observations. I am passionate that each work create
a feeling
and draws the curiosity of the observer." .-.Benjamin Williamson
