What they are saying about Jenn Grinels, " Little Words—Big Voice"

One of the rare moments occurs when you hear and see someone so fetching to the ear that the experience stands out, in and of itself. Hailing from San Diego, Grinels brings coffee shops to a halt with her stunning vocals and original songs. Grinels' voice has a ‘torch song’ soulfulness to it that perfectly conveys the ‘lost in love’ lyrics that she writes. She is very polished in vocal delivery.

Recently the IE Weekly did an article on the growing DIY phenomena that is rewriting the whole mainstream record industry. Jenn Grinels’ CD ‘Little Words’ shows just how much fun the DIY approach can be without the ‘suits’ looking over your shoulder determining this and that. The cover has a proletarian look to it that is professionally done. Grinels' voice really has to be heard to be believed. It’s jazzy in its pacing, soulful in its delivery, heartfelt in its sensuous tone, and the poetic timing of the words speaks volumes. This is a singer that you know will be discovered, and soon. As one North County Times reporter put it, she is one of the top singers on a very short list in San Diego, or anywhere else for that matter.

Jenn Grinels is a force to be reckoned with. She brings to the table of music a seamless blend of influences—a punk folksinger who writes songs that appeal to the coffee house crowds and simultaneously climb the college pop/rock charts. Jenn can sing anything—rock, folk, blues, pop, jazz, punk—and make it sound like its only the music that matters. Virtuosity with lyrics and melody writing and a mind-boggling range, not only of actual notes but also of emotional timbres—she has tremendous power that resounds with emotional sincerity. Jenn can stun the audiences with her laughter and smiles juxtaposed against the brutal poetics of her lyrics and reckless manhandling of her guitar—her music rocking the boat one minute and cradling it the next. If you are a fan, you know what I am talking about. If not, you are missing out.

Jenn is opening new musical territories few female singer/songwriters dare to tread. Sadly most will stay in their little towns of pretty tunes and pretty lyrics and pretty sameness. But for those who feel the burning desire to go farther out and experience music at a wilder level, Jenn Grinels blazes a path to a new world with a flair and individuality evidenced by all the great musicians before her.

Want the history?
Jenn hails from NorCal, specifically Cupertino—the heart of silicon valley. She migrated south to study musical theatre at UC Irvine. After graduation, Jenn moved to SoCal where she now resides. Jenn has the stellar job of performing in musicals to pay the rent. Most recently she portrayed Janis Joplin in the 60's musical Beehive at the Theatre in Old Town and Yitzhak in the rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch at Cygnet Theatre.
