Gardening Reminder
The rain
is coming and that means new plant growth is just around the
corner. I normally prune my roses (30 this year) in December
or January but it's not too late to take care of this if you
haven't already. Pruning rose bushes can be intimidating, but
it's very good for the plants. It takes time and practice, but
keep in mind that it is very hard to kill a rose with bad pruning.
Most mistakes will grow out very quickly and it is better to
make a good effort at pruning roses than to let them grow rampant.
Pruning encourages new growth and blooms, removes dead wood,
improves air circulation, and shapes the plant.
Here are
some basic tips, go for it, you won’t be sorry!
Use clean,
sharp tools (steel wool will clean up the blades of your sheers
nicely)
Look at
the overall plant, but begin pruning from the base of the plant.
Prune
to open the center of the plant to light and air circulation
(I like to leave 5 good branches)
Make your
cuts at a 45-degree angle, about 1/4 inch above a bud that
is facing toward the outside of the plant. (I cut my hybrids
down to about 2 feet tall)
Make sure it is a clean cut (not ragged)
Remove
all broken, dead, dying or diseased wood (Any branches that
look dry, shriveled or black.Cut
until the inside of the cane is white.)
Remove
any weak or twiggy branches thinner than a pencil
Remove
sucker growth below the graft.
Remove
any remaining foliage
Don’t
forget A Boost for your Plants
Not
only do you need nourishment, so do your plants. Have you composted
lately? Keep the moisture in and up the PH by adding a layer
of coffee grounds to the soil around those plants. Free used
coffee grounds are available at The Cup. Help yourself to a bag
located in the grey bin under the calendar. We suggest you bring
a container to rest the bag in case there is any leakage.

Special
Award
July 13, 2009, The
Neighborhood Cup, was honored by Aliso Viejo Community Association Board

volunteerism each year since we opened, 4 years ago. Since that
time, The Cup has supported many AVCA events.
The AVCA appreciated the support

The Neighborhood Cup has brought to Aliso Viejo and recognized
us with the AVCA Community Leader Award. We were honored by
their recognition.
